Nairobi, Kenya
Sept. 2018
After our safari we stayed two nights in the city of Nairobi. We rented a taxi for the full day because the public transportation in Nairobi is very bad. The taxi took us to every location in Nairobi we wanted to go to. First we visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) located next to Nairobi National Park. The DSWT is a non-profit organization which helps orphaned elephants which lost their mothers (e.g. killed by poachers) or got hurt and are therefore unable to survive in the wilderness.
After that we proceeded to the Kazuri Bead Factory. It was founded back in 1975 by an English expat who wanted to support single mother by giving them work there. We had a free guided tour through the whole factory showing us the process from moulding the clay to painting the final necklace.
After that the Karen Blixen Museum has been on our agenda. Karen Blixen is well known as the author of the bestseller book 'Out of Africa'. Her former house is located in the west of the city and is open to the public nowadays. In her honors the neighborhood has been named 'Karen'.
Our final stop of the day was the Giraffe Centre. You are able to see and even feed the Rothschild giraffes there. What a great experience this was !
